Hurriyat strike disrupts life in Kashmir Valley

Shops,business establishments and private offices in main markets in Srinagar and other major towns remained closed on Monday.

Normal life was disrupted in Kashmir Valley for the third day on Monday due to the strike call given by hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference,headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

Private vehicles plied in large numbers on all routes,despite attempts by groups of stone-pelting youth to disrupt the vehicular movement at a few places in Srinagar,including Nowgam this morning.

A police spokesman said the law and order situation remained peaceful with no untoward incident reported from anywhere.

“There was no curfew in any part of the Valley as the law and order situation remained peaceful,” he said.

Hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference gave a call for a three-day “civil curfew” in the Valley from November 6,coinciding with the visit of the US President Barack Obama to India.

Kashmir Valley has been in the grip of protests,strikes and curfew since June when a 17-year-old boy was killed by a tear smoke shell allegedly fired by police at Rajouri Kadal area of the city.
