Four officials among ten arrested in ration scams in J-K

Efforts are on to arrest the accused for their custodial interrogation in order to unearth more details of huge scam,officials said.

Ten persons,including two Deputy Directors,have been arrested in connection with two ration scams in Kishtwar and Rajouri districts of Jammu and Kashmir,sources said today.

Crime Branch of Police conducted raids at the premises of the Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) department in Srinagar,Anantnag and Jammu yesterday and arrested the four accused officials in connection with misappropriation of food grains worth over Rs 31 lakh meant for Warwan and Marwah blocks of Kishtwar district,Crime Branch officials said.

The arrested officials have been identified as Deputy Director CAPD,South Kashmir,Khurshid Ahmed Sanaye,the then Assistant Director and presently Deputy Director CAPD of North Kashmir Riyaz Ahmad Wani,Incharge Supervisors Vailoo Godown Manzoor Ahmed Ganie and Ghulam Rasool Sheikh,they said.

Incriminating documents,pass books of various bank accounts and documents of various properties were also seized by the department,they said.

The special team was constituted on April 2,2009,to conduct an enquiry into the alleged misappropriation of food grains for distribution among the rationees of twin blocks of Warwan and Marwah in Kishtwar district resulting in acute shortage of foodgrains,they said.

The committee,in its preliminary investigation,established the allegations and the government recommended the case to the Crime Branch on June 19,2009,for detailed investigation after which the Crime Branch registered a case,the officials said.

They later found that CAPD officials had misappropriated foodgrains of Vailoo and Inshan Godowns to the tune of Rs 31,52,660.

They established a case of misappropriation and bungling in CAPD and later arrested the accused.

In another case,two ration dealers were among six persons arrested when police seized 330 bags of government ration from a truck in Dharamsal area of Rajouri district late last night,police said.

The truck was intercepted and ration of the CAPD department meant for Below Poverty Line (BPL) people,which was being diverted to a rice mill in Jammu,was recovered,they said.

Those arrested have been identified as Jagdev Sigh and Amar Singh (both ration dealers),Pritam Singh,Chamel Singh,besides two other persons.

A case has been registered in this direction and investigation has started,police said.
