Dalit leader flays Thackeray over Dadar station renaming

Chaityabhoomi, said the political class in Maharashtra should change its ideology in relation to caste.

Criticising Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray for his remark over renaming of Dadar station as Chaityabhoomi,a prominent Dalit leader today said the political class in Maharashtra should change its ideology in relation to caste.

“In Maharashtra, there is a caste ideology among the political class. This needs to change? But will he (Thackeray) amend his ideology or not?” Jogendra Kawade, chief of People’s Republican Party, said while talking to PTI here.

Thackeray, addressing Sena’s Dussehra rally at Shivaji Park here yesterday, maintained that even if Dadar station is renamed as Chaitybhoomi – as demanded by some groups – it would not bring any change in the lives of Dalits. Dadar in central Mumbai houses Chaityabhoomi, the memorial of Dalit icon B R Ambedkar.

“Don’t press for such a demand. Dadar will remain Dadar. If the name is changed, will it make any impact on your (Dalits) lives? You will remain where you are,” Thackeray had stated.

Attacking Thackeray,Kawade said,”If he does not want to change names, then why does he insists on renaming Aurangabad as Sambhajinagar. Why did he rename Victoria Terminus (station in Mumbai) as Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus?”

Due to Ambedkar’s efforts and blessings, revolutionary changes have taken place among Dalits,he added.
