Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi warned the government that an ‘earthquake’ will come if he is allowed to speak on demonetisation in Parliament. “The government is running away from debate…if they allow me to speak then you will see what an earthquake will come,” Gandhi told reporters.

Ye Hindustan ki history ka sabse bada scam hai…main Lok Sabha mein bolna chahta hoon. Wahan sab bataonga (This is the biggest scam in the history of India. I want to speak in Lok Sabha. I will tell everything there),” Gandhi added, referring to the government’s decision to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes on the night of November 8. While the decision was aimed at flushing out black money from the economy and slashing at the roots of terrorist funding from counterfeit currency, the opposition has claimed that it has caused massive heartburn among the public. Long queues have been reported outside banks and ATMs since November 9 as people flocked to exchange and withdraw money. Around 86 per cent of the country’s currency in circulation in the form of old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes were withdrawn by the government.

The demonetisation row has rocked both Houses of Parliament in the ongoing winter session. While the debate has been kickstarted in both Houses, it has not seen a logical conclusion or a statement from the prime minister.

“PM poore desh mein bhashan de rahe hain magar Lok Sabha mein aane se darrte hain. Itni ghabrahat kyun (PM gives speeches all across the country but is scared to come to Lok Sabha. Why is he afraid?)” Gandhi was quoted saying by news agency ANI today.
