Security beefed up outside Rahul Gandhi’s residence amid reports of possible disturbance by right-wing groups

In his maiden speech as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Gandhi triggered a row by taking a swipe at the BJP, saying those who call themselves Hindus are engaged in “violence and hate” round the clock.

The Delhi Police has stepped up security outside Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s residence following intelligence inputs of disturbance by right-wing groups, sources said on Wednesday.

A platoon of paramilitary forces and several teams of Delhi Police personnel have been deployed outside the residence of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi in Delhi.

The action was taken after intelligence inputs on possible disturbance were received on Tuesday, sources confirmed.

The police suspect that right-wing people may gather with placards or hoardings outside his residence. The Delhi Police has been asked to increase vigil for 24 hours around his residence, news agency PTI reported citing sources.

Gandhi enjoys Z-plus security with the L (advanced security liaison) category under the CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) personnel.

Why the perceived threat

In his maiden speech as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Gandhi triggered a row by taking a swipe at the BJP, saying those who call themselves Hindus are engaged in “violence and hate” round the clock.

Following Rahul Gandhi’s speech on Monday, Narendra Modi rose from his seat and said, “This is a very serious issue. Calling the entire Hindu society violent is a serious issue (poore Hindu samaj ko hinsak kehna yeh gambhir vishay hai).”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also sought an apology from the Congress leader.

As the treasury benches protested, Gandhi said, “the BJP and the RSS are not the entire Hindu society… Aap Hindu ho hi nahi (You are not Hindus).”

The day also saw Congress and BJP workers clashing at Gujarat Congress headquarters Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan in Ahmedabad to protest against Gandhi’s statement

On Wednesday, the Delhi BJP leaders and workers staged a protest in Delhi over Gandhi’s remarks against the saffron party and sought an apology from him.

The protesters assembled near Jaisalmer House and tried to move towards the Congress headquarters on Akbar Road, raising slogans against Gandhi and his party.
