“I have KTM 390 but I don’t use it, my security men don’t allow me,” Rahul Gandhi said during his interaction with bike mechanics in Karol Bagh, a locality in New Delhi. He visited the area on June 27 but the video of the visit is now out on Rahul Gandhi’s official YouTube channel. Calling it the “next pit stop” of the “Bharat Jodo Yatra”, Gandhi shared on social media glimpses of his candid conversations with the mechanics.

In the video, Gandhi struck up a conversation with a mechanic who repairs Enfield Bullet motorcycles after a photo on the wall caught his eye. When Gandhi spoke of his desire to travel to Leh-Ladakh on a motorbike, the mechanic shared details of his 15-day trip to Leh on a motorbike in the 1980s.

Gandhi was later seen in the video assisting two mechanics with the maintenance work of a Honda motorbike while talking to them about their aspirations.

“If a person is not a mechanic then they are usually not aware of what goes behind the repairing of a vehicle, what troubles you face. I just wanted to learn how you guys work here,” Gandhi said.

Addressing the conditions the mechanics work in, Gandhi said their kids don’t want to follow their father’s profession. If provided a conducive atmosphere for growth, Gandhi asked them what would be the next step for them. “Hero Honda was established by Honda who was a mechanic. Tell me of a mechanic who started his own company in India? The potential and capability you have are not opening doors for you. Your talent is not being appreciated,” Gandhi said.

“We never thought that we would sit and have tea with Rahul Gandhi. He has knowledge of bikes as well and I was very happy to meet him,” one mechanic said. Another appreciated his work with the Bharat Jodo Yatra and his interest in their lives and understanding their troubles while not breaching the topic of politics during interaction.
