In election bound Wayanad where landslides had killed 276 people in July this year, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, said it was a localised incident and tourists can bravely visit the spot. In a video posted on social media, on the eve of election day in where Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi is making her electoral debut, the former Congress president was seen ziplining and enjoying the ride.
Reassuring tourists of safety in visiting Wayanad, Rahul Gandhi said, “There is no problem in Wayanad. The landslide was a localised event, so tourism must not be damaged.” Afterwards, Rahul ventures on ziplining while scenic hills and a water body is seen in the background.
Landslides in Chooralmala and Meppadi had killed at least 276 people and resulted in widespread destruction.
Priyanka, who fights the electoral battle against BJP’s Navya Haridas and LDF candidate Satyan Mokeri, says in the video, “Whoever, I was meeting has a huge effect of landslide. One huge effect of the landslide is on tourism, which in a way is unjustified in the sense that the landslide was just in a very restricted area. As somebody said, Wayanad’s actually got a huge area very very beautiful, natural landscape, many beautiful things too. And I met homestay owners, they have all also have been deeply affected. They are not able to pay their staff anymore for the last three months. So we just want to emphasise how Wayanad is safe. It is absolutely beautiful.”
Sitting inside a car with Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka says, “I have done zipline over Ganga in Rishikesh with Miraya. I really enjoyed it. It was a zipline across the Ganga. Did you feel the effect of the landslide?”
After the first five hours of polling, Wayanad has recorded a voter turnout of 34.38 percent. Emotional scenes were witnessed at polling stations set up for the survivors of the landslides, as they met their neighbours and close friends after a long time since the disaster. A special free vehicle service has been made available for landslide survivors to reach the polling stations from the various places they are temporarily residing at.
