Prime Minister Narendra Modi Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Brunei on September 3 and 4 — the first bilateral visit by any Indian PM to the tiny nation — followed by a trip to Singapore on September 4 and 5.
Modi will be in Singapore at the invitation of Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. “The leaders will review the progress of India–Singapore Strategic Partnership and exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest,” said a statement by the Ministry of External Affairs on Friday.
The visit to Brunei — at the invitation of its ruler and Prime Minister Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah — coincides with 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between India and Brunei, which is located on the island of Borneo.
Noting that Brunei is an important partner in India’s ‘Act East’ Policy and its vision of Indo-Pacific, the MEA statement said the visit will strengthen India’s cooperation with Brunei in existing sectors — defence cooperation, trade and investment, energy, space technology, health, capacity building, culture as well as people-to-people exchanges — while also exploring avenues for cooperation in newer sectors.
During the visit to Singapore, PM Modi will hold a bilateral meeting with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. He will also meet business leaders.
Earlier this week, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, and Railways & IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had visited Singapore for the 2nd India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable, which was held in Singapore on 26 August 2024.
The Ministers reviewed the progress of India–Singapore Strategic Partnership in the fields of digitalization, skill development, sustainability and healthcare, which were identified during the 1st meeting of ISMR held in New Delhi in September 2022, the MEA said.
