Apple’s chief executive Tim Cook on Wednesday evening met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.

In a Twitter post, Apple’s head said his company was committed to investing across the country.

“Thank you Prime Minister @narendramodi for the warm welcome. We share your vision of the positive impact technology can make on India’s future — from education and developers to manufacturing and the environment, we’re committed to growing and investing across the country,” Cook tweeted.

Modi said he exchanged views on diverse topics and highlighted the tech-powered transformations taking place in India.

Cook, who is on India visit, launched Apple’s retail store in Mumbai on Tuesday, the first one in the country after 25 years when the technology company started selling its products and services in the country through partners.

Apple will be launching its second store–in Delhi’s Saket–on Thursday.

Apple’s maiden retail store in the country has been a subject of great speculation since at least 2019 when Indian policymakers warmed up to the idea of welcoming foreign direct investment in single-brand retail.

The permissions to allow such stores have come with riders like mandates on local sourcing in the final finished goods.
