Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived in the Maldives on Friday on a two-day visit, was received on arrival by President Mohamed Muizzu.

PM Modi will attend the archipelago nation’s 60th Independence Day celebrations as the chief guest. He was accorded ceremonial welcome at Republic Square in Malé, Maldives.

PM Modi and President Muizzu are also scheduled to hold extensive talks during the trip. The Prime Minister was welcomed with a traditional dance performance by children.

This is the first state visit of a head of government that President Muizzu is hosting in his presidency since assuming office in November 2023, according to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

Many Indian expatriates living in the Maldives expressed excitement over the Prime Minister’s visit.

“The Indian diaspora plays a crucial role in furthering friendship between India and the Maldives. Happy to have interacted with members of the diaspora and I thank them for the warm welcome,” PM Modi said.

PM Modi left for the Maldives for the second leg of his two-nation tour, soon after an audience with King Charles III at his Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, eastern England.
