The government on Tuesday released a March 1 letter written by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to astronaut Sunita Williams, wishing her a safe return and inviting her to visit India.

The letter was released by MoS (PMO) Jitendra Singh, who said the PM had sent it to Williams through astronaut Mike Massimino whom he met on March 1.

The letter says, “1.4 billion Indians have always taken great pride in your achievements. Recent developments have yet again showcased your inspirational fortitude and perseverance. Even though you are thousands of miles away, you continue to remain close to our hearts. The people of India are praying for your good health and success in your mission.”

In a post on X Tuesday, Singh claimed Williams was “touched” by the PM’s gesture. “…Wishing her strength and a safe return, the PM reaffirmed India’s deep bond with its illustrious daughter. Sunita, in turn, touched by the gesture, expressed her gratitude to PM Modi and India,” Singh said.

Williams, who was stranded at the International Space Station (ISS) for over nine months, is scheduled to return to Earth on Wednesday.

Modi recalled in the letter meeting Williams in 2016, when he met her late father Deepak Pandya as well, while on a visit to the US. The letter said Williams’ mother Bonnie Pandya “must be keenly waiting” for her return.

“After your return, we are looking forward to seeing you in India. It will be a pleasure for India to host one of its most illustrious daughters,” the letter said.

In the letter, the PM said he always inquired about the well-being of Williams when he visited the US and met President Donald Trump or former President Joe Biden.
