One of the world’s largest and most fuel-efficient container ships, MSC Türkiye, docked at Vizhinjam International Seaport, Wednesday, marking a milestone in the journey of India’s first deepwater transshipment port.

Hailing it as a landmark in the country’s maritime history, Kerala Minister for Ports V N Vasavan said this marks the first-ever docking of the giant container ship at an Indian port as well as in South Asia.

The two-year-old ship, MSC Türkiye measures 399.9 m in length, 61.3 m in width and 33.5 m in depth and is currently sailing under the flag of Liberia. It was received at the seaport with a water salute. The ship can load about 24,346 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), making it one of the world’s largest container ships.

The arrival Wednesday cements Vizhinjam’s role as a key hub in the Asia-Europe shipping route, ushering in a era of connectivity and economic growth. Vizhinjam is the first international deepwater transhipment port in the Indian subcontinent, with a natural depth of more than 18 m, scalable up to 20 m.
