The government of Nepal has said the open border with neighbouring countries is creating security and law and order problems for the country.

said that the open borders with neighbours have become a challenge to national ‘security’ , and at times it was creating law and order problems.

The home ministry letter, read out by Sita Kafle Wagle, the secretary of the committee, on Monday said Nepal’s long and porous borders with two neighbours–India and China –have become a challenge to its security.

Nepal shares a 1,850-km border with India with no travel restrictions to citizens of either side. It shares around a 1,400-km border with China, with movement regulated.

The letter said the open border has contributed to human and drug trafficking, smuggling of arms and weapons besides fugitives crossing the border and taking refuge in Nepal.

The home ministry letter, however, gave no indications about any plan to regulate the border with India.
