A teenage student from Jharkhand allegedly died by suicide on Tuesday in Rajasthan’s Kota, officials said on Wednesday.
According to the police, the deceased girl was preparing for the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET).
“At around 10:30-11:00 pm yesterday, we got information from the hospital that a student had died by suicide. She was preparing for NEET and was a resident of Ranchi, Jharkhand,” said Assistant Sub Inspector Amar Chand from the Vigyan Nagar police station, Kota on Wednesday.
Officials said that the family of the girl has been intimated and further investigation into the incident is being conducted.
The girl’s death takes the student suicide toll this year in Kota to 24, the highest figure in the last eight years.
Last month, after two other NEET aspirants died by suicide, the state government barred coaching centres from holding exams for a period of two months. The also introduced several other measures, including the installation of spring-loaded fans.
According to data available with the Kota police, 17 students had died by suicide in 2015, with the figures since then being—16 in 2016, 7 in 2017, 20 in 2018, 8 in 2019, 4 in 2021 (students had left Kota due to the Covid-19 pandemic) and 15 in 2022.
