The Bombay High Court is hearing a PIL filed by Bombay Mutton Dealers Association
With the Bombay Mutton Dealer’s Association challenging Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) decision to ban the sale of meat for four days during the Jain festival of Paryushan, beginning Thursday, the Bombay High Court has asked the state government and BMC to file a response if there has always been a ban on sale of mutton previously on these days.
The association had claimed that the ban was only limited to slaughtering on two days, according to earlier practice.

In 2014, too, the sale of meat was banned in the city for four days. The demand to ban meat sale, as per the order, was made by Ahimsa Sangh, Vishwamaitri Trust.
The petitioners have claimed that the decision is unconstitutional and favours a small percentage of population besides going against the secular fabric of the constitution.
The HC further asked the government and BMC to clarify its stand on chicken and if it was banned too. “The concept of sale seems to be the issue here, what happens if it is available from other sources will that be banned,” asked Justices Anoop Mohta and AA Sayed.
The BMC had sent a written notice directing that all slaughterhouses and meat shops remain shut on September 10, 13, 17 and 18 this year. While the ban of two days on September 10 and 17 was as per government’s directives, the ban on the other days – 13 and 18 – was imposed by BMC. The court questioned if the BMC had obtained sanction for this.
