A day after Mohan Yadav took charge as Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, the BJP government demolished the homes of three men accused of attacking a party worker — the first such bulldozer action under the new dispensation.

This comes a day after Yadav issued an order banning loudspeakers/ DJs at religious gatherings and public places at a volume exceeding prescribed limits, and announced an “intensive campaign” to check “illegal buying and selling of meat, fish, etc”. On Thursday, around 10 meat shops were demolished.

According to police, on December 5, Devendra Singh Thakur, the mandal general secretary of the BJP jhuggi jhopri cell, was allegedly attacked with a sword by one Farukh, following an argument over the election results. Thakur suffered deep cuts to his hand while shielding himself, police said.

Following the incident, senior BJP leaders had visited Thakur at the hospital, and staged demonstrations demanding strict action against the accused.

Apart from Farukh, police have arrested four others identified as Aslam, Shahrukh, Bilal and Sameer.

On Thursday, bulldozers razed the homes of three of the men, with officials claiming they did not have requisite permissions under the building plan.

“We demolished the homes of the three men accused in the case after violations were found. The men got into a violent confrontation after they taunted each other over the election results. Farukh has a criminal record and charges under the NSA (National Security Act) have been slapped against him,” said Manish Raj Singh Bhadoriya, the in-charge of Habibganj police station.

Meanwhile, elaborating on the action against the meat shops, Radhe Shyam Mandloi, the Additional Commissioner of Ujjain Municipal Corporation, told ANI: “According to the order, without permission, meat and fish cannot be sold. Action has been taken in Nagjhar area against 10 shops that were selling meat in the open; some shops that were near the streets have been damaged… Teams are also working in other sectors…”
