The chemistry and friendship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump was evident during the former’s trip to the US, and at the press conference the two leaders held together.
Calling Modi “a very special man”, Trump recalled the hospitality accorded to him and his wife, Melania, during their trip to India in 2020, during his earlier term as the US President.
Several times, both leaders talked about their relationship during Trump’s earlier term.
Here are some statements that show the personal bond between the two leaders, and the impact it could have on the ties over the next three years:
The friendship between the United States and India is the strongest it has ever been… I think our relationship is the best it has ever been between two leaders of the two countries – Trump
I am grateful to you for your great friendship and strong commitment towards India. The people of India still fondly remember your visit in 2020 and that President Trump will come and visit them again – Modi
We are going to have a fantastic relationship and it will make both countries much stronger – Trump, on both countries combating ISIS and terrorism together
I don’t think India had a very good relationship with the (Joe) Biden administration. A lot of things happened that were not very appropriate between India and the Biden administration – Trump, on allegations levelled against Indian agencies during the Biden regime (Pannun plot case)
One person who has a copyright on the word EV, and that is Mr Trump – Modi, on his meeting with Elon Musk and any upcoming EV deals
He is a much tougher negotiator than me, and he is a much better negotiator. There’s not even a contest – Trump, on tariff talks between the two leaders
I thank my dear friend, President Trump, for the great welcome I was accorded, and for his hospitality. President Trump – with his leadership – has made India-America ties come alive – Modi
The satisfaction of having achieved so much together during his first term and the trust built during his first term, acted as a bridge during our discussions today — Modi, on his talks with Trump
We missed you a lot; nice to see you again – Trump on receiving Modi at the White House, also pulling a chair for PM Modi.
