Mizoram Landslide Highlights, May 28, 2024: At least 24 people were killed across Mizoram, Assam, Nagaland and Meghalaya on Tuesday, in storm-related incidents following the landfall of Cyclone Remal. President Droupadi Murmu offered condolences following the deaths of 12 people in a stone quarry collapse near Aizawl in Mizoram.

The Mizoram government has approved Rs 4 lakh as ex-gratia payment for the families of the deceased, and sanctioned an amount of Rs 15 crore for relief work, besides extending assistance to the relatives of the deceased. The state government has ordered the closure of all schools, banks, financial institutions, public sector undertakings and government offices except those rendering essential services

Meanwhile, a 17-year-old boy was killed and several others were injured amid heavy rains accompanied by strong winds in Assam, news agency PTI. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of extremely heavy rainfall across the northeastern states as an impact of Remal. Cyclone Remal has caused storms in many areas in the Northeast, leading to disruption in road connectivity and uprooted trees.

A total of 24 bodies have been recovered in storm-related incidents in Mizoram, while another 12 bodies are yet to be recovered.

Toll rises to 22 following storm-related incidents

The death toll in storm-related incidents in the north-eastern region climbed to 22, after a 19-year-old Mintu Talukdar died after a tree fell on their family's house in Guwahati. His father had also been injured, but has now be released from the hospital.

Two killed, 17 injured as heavy rains lash Assam

Two persons were killed and 17 others injured in separate incidents as heavy rains accompanied by strong winds, as an impact of cyclone Remal, left a trail of destruction in Assam, officials said. One person, identified as Putul Gogoi, died in a landslide caused by incessant rains at the under-construction NHPC's Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power project at Gerukamukh in Lakhimpur district, they said.

A 17-year-old college student, identified as Kausik Bordoloi Amphi, was killed when a tree fell on the auto-rickshaw in which he was travelling at Dighalbori in Morigaon district. There were four others in the vehicle and all of them were injured, officials said.

In Sonitpur district's Dhekiajuli, a tree fell on a school bus and injured 12 children. They were admitted to a local hospital. Another person was injured in the Palashbari area in Kamrup district as he tried to escape a falling tree.

Road connectivity disrupted in Assam's Dima Hasao district

A portion of the Haflong-Silchar road has been washed away. Dima Hasao police has advised that vehicular movement on the NH-27 between Haflong and Harangjao be avoided as it has been submerged in multiple places.

Assam CM Himanta requests everyone to stay indoors until situation stabilizes

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday requested everyone to stay indoors until the impact of cyclone Remal on the Northeastern state stabilizes.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, "Cyclone Remal has affected Assam, causing storms in many areas. Tragically, a student, Kausik Bordoloi Amphi (17), died in Marigaon, and 12 students were injured in Dekhiajuli due to falling trees. In Guwahati,Uprooted trees in places like Cotton University and Jyoti Chitraban caused no damage to people or buildings. Power supply is disrupted in lower Assam, including Guwahati. We are monitoring the situation and request everyone to stay indoors until the situation stabilizes."

Parts of Northeast India has been battered by cyclone Remal, where multiple landslides across Manipur, Mizoram, Assam, and Meghalaya were witnessed.

At least 16 people were reported to be dead across Northeasters states, while many more were injured. The road connectivity has been disrupted, while power supply in lower Assam, including Guwahati, has been completely disrupted.

At least fifteen people were killed in landslides across Aizawl on Tuesday, including 11 in a stone quarry collapse, with Mizoram witnessing storms caused by cyclone Remal, which has now weakened into a deep depression.

Two more bodies have been recovered from the site of another landslide, while another body has been recovered from a third site.

Heavy rains may cause waterlogging in Northeast states today, warns IMD as cyclone Remal weakens

With cyclonic storm Remal weakening into a deep depression, heavy rainfall is likely over parts of West Bengal and northeastern states on Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said.

This deep depression will gradually weaken into a depression in the next six hours, the IMD bulletin stated.

Heavy rainfall is predicted over parts of Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura, and light rainfall over others. The rains may cause damage to vulnerable structures and thatched houses/huts, kutcha and pucca roads due to heavy rain, inundation of low-lying areas and localized flooding, as well as disruption of traffic due to waterlogging, the IMD has warned.
