A crowd tried to vandalise the home of Sharda Devi, BJP (women's wing) president near Porampet in Imphal around midnight. Security forces managed to disperse the youth. Earlier in the day, crowds set up roadblocks and torched properties in the heart of Imphal town on Friday, officials said.
The Army, Assam Rifles and Manipur Rapid Action Force held joint marches till midnight through Imphal to halt rioters from congregating. The RAF fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.
Meanwhile, former Indian Army chief general (Retired) Ved Prakash Malik Friday called for "urgent attention" to the law and order situation in the state. The Congress hit out at the BJP government in Manipur and the Centre and asked when will Prime Minister Narendra Modi speak out on the situation in the violence-hit state and make an appeal for peace.
In a tweet, Congress leader P Chidambaram said, "One engine (the state) has run out of fuel. The other engine (the Centre) has decoupled itself and is hiding in the loco shed. It is obvious that Mr Biren Singh has lost the confidence of all sections of the people of Manipur. It is also obvious that Mr Narendra Modi is not willing to talk to the people of Manipur nor even make an appeal for peace".
