A confrontation also broke out between the police and protesters; while the former fired tear gas to disperse them, the latter pelted stones using catapults.
According to police officials, the arrested accused confessed that Kadir died while “questioning” about an alleged theft case, and that his body was then buried.
Police said Kadir’s body was exhumed in the presence of the executive magistrate, the forensic team and family members.
The nine accused have been produced before a magistrate and remanded to police custody for further investigation.
Meitei Pangal civil bodies condemned the killing, terming it barbaric. The United Meitei-Pangal Committee demanded that swift justice be delivered in the case by handing it over to the National Investigation Agency.
