Lok Sabha Election 2024 Live Updates:  Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that Congress’s “Constitution forced on Goans” remark shows the party’s hidden agenda that only vote bank matters. The Prime Minister further said that while the grand old party had never bothered about fishermen, his government had created a separate fisheries ministry. Modi also said that the BJP government was engaged in making Goa an international conference hub.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) named special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam as its Lok Sabha candidate from Mumbai North Central, replacing sitting MP Poonam Mahajan. Speculations were rife that the party was likely to pick a new candidate for the seat amid anti-incumbency and the changed political equations in the seat. Mahajan had won the seat for the party in 2014 and 2019.

Phase 2 polling concludes: Polling concluded for 88 seats across 13 states and Union Territories under the second phase of general elections on Friday, with the provisional turnout at 64.2%, which was expected to rise, although marginally, as electors were still lined up to cast their votes in parts of RajasthanWest Bengal, Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra close to 6 pm yesterday. A third of the total 543 Lok Sabha seats — including all the seats in Kerala, Rajasthan, Manipur and Tripura, and 14 of the 28 seats in Karnataka — have now completed polling.

BJP's condition will worsen in remaining phases of LS polls: Akhilesh Yadav

The condition of the BJP will worsen in the remaining phases of the Lok Sabha polls, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav claimed on Saturday, a day after the second round of polling was held in 88 seats across 13 states.

After the first phase of polling on April 19, Yadav in a statement had said that the BJP is in a very weak position in the ongoing elections while the INDIA bloc, of which the Samajwadi Party (SP) is a member, is on a strong wicket.

In a post on X, he claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has not got voters in the first two phases and, in the remaining phases, it will note even get booth agents.

"After the first two phases of voting, the condition of the BJP will be worse in the next phases," he said and claimed that people are ensuring the BJP's departure.

Sharing a video clip of a news channel reporter speaking to a purported BJP booth agent, the SP chief said that after "10 years of lies by BJP leaders, a "booth agent of the BJP" is speaking the truth about the party's poor condition.

He is saying that the reason people are for not voting in the BJP's favour is because of inflation and unemployment, Yadav claimed.

Congress accuses CPI(M) of hijacking poll machinery to bring down polling percentage

A day after polling concluded for the 20 Lok Sabha seats in Kerala, the Congress on Saturday alleged that voters were harassed and the election machinery was hijacked by the ruling CPI(M) in the state with an aim to bring down the turnout percentage.

AICC general secretary K C Venugopal said the alleged hijacking of the election machinery by the ruling CPI(M) was one of the reasons for the decrease in polling percentage this year as compared to the turnout in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Despite heightened political fervour and anticipation about the general elections for the 20 Lok Sabha seats in Kerala, the process concluded with a notable decrease in voter turnout, as the figure stood at 70.22 per cent at 8pm yesterday. This figure, while significant, was quite a drop from the polling percentage of 77.84 per cent registered in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Venugopal claimed that there were glitches in electronic voting machines (EVMs) in three to five per cent of the polling booths in the state that lead to long delays in the election process which in turn caused discomfort to the voters who had to stand in long queues for hours in the intense heat. The senior Congress leader alleged that 90 per cent of such EVM glitches occurred in booths where the UDF was strong.

"It was a polling process that harassed voters as no drinking water, sitting or lighting facilities were available in the booths where people waited for hours to vote due to the EVM glitches. The election machinery was completely hijacked by the CPI(M) with the aim of bringing down the polling percentage," he alleged. -- PTI

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Modi slams TMC over school jobs scam, says Bengal's youth paying the price

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday slammed the TMC over the cancellation of around 26,000 jobs following a high court, stating that the youths of West Bengal have suffered due to the "cut-and-commission" culture of the party, which is now "synonymous with scams".

Addressing an election rally in Malda, the PM highlighted that the youths, who had taken loans to pay bribes to TMC leaders, are burdened by this situation. "The TMC indulges in scams for which the people of the state have to suffer.

The party has been playing with the future of the youths of Bengal," he said. "The teacher recruitment scam snatched the livelihood of around 26,000 families," he said.

Earlier this week, the Calcutta High Court declared the recruitment process of the State Level Selection Test-2016 (SLST) in West Bengal government-sponsored and aided schools as "null and void," ordering the cancellation of all appointments made through it. "Under TMC rule, only one thing exists - scams totalling thousands of crores. The culprit is TMC, but the entire state is forced to pay for its deception," he said. -- PTI

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Nadda says Cong seeks to give Muslims quota meant for SCs, OBCs

PTI is reporting that BJP president J P Nadda has accused the Congress of seeking to snatch the rights of SCs, STs and OBCs to benefit Muslims, alleging that it is the hidden agenda of the opposition party.

This echoes BJP's attempts to project the Congress as a party championing interests of Muslims at the cost of traditionally deprived Hindu groups. Nadda reportedly added that the opposition party has long been making the grounds for the minority community to be declared as SCs and give them reservation.

He issued a video statement as the second phase of the Lok Sabha polls got underway.

The BJP leader cited the then prime minister Manmohan Singh's 2006 statement of minorities, especially Muslims, having the first rights on the country's resources and added that he made similar comments in April 2009. The Congress has accused the BJP of selectively quoting Singh and claimed that the ruling party has resorted to spreading falsehoods and communal division for polarisation during the elections due to a lack of public support to it in the ongoing polls.

In Bihar battle second round, a big test for JD(U); 5 Lok Sabha seats at stake

In the battleground state of Bihar, the second phase of polling on Friday will see five constituencies go to the polls, including three from the Muslim-dominated Seemanchal region.

Of the constituencies of Purnia, Kishanganj, and Katihar in Seemanchal and the nearby ones of Banka and Bhagalpur, the Janata Dal (United) currently holds four. Only Kishanganj is represented by the Congress. The fourth constituency in Seemanchal, Araria, will go to polls in the third phase on May 7. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to address a rally in Araria’s Forbesganj on Friday, there is a likelihood of its impact in the remaining constituencies.

West Bengal: As BJP hopes to repeat 3-0 score, it faces TMC challenge

As three constituencies of West Bengal vote on Friday in the second phase of Lok Sabha elections, the school jobs “scam” is back in the spotlight following the Calcutta High Court’s order on Monday cancelling the appointment of over 25,000 teachers and non-teaching staff of government schools in the state.

Among the three seats — Darjeeling, Raiganj, and Balurghat — the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has not won the last two, both bordering Bangladesh, since it came to power in the state in 2011. The BJP, on the other hand, had won all three seats in the last Lok Sabha elections.

With Cong in disarray, BJP in driving seat in MP Phase 2

The seven constituencies of Madhya Pradesh going to polls in the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections on April 26 – Tikamgarh, Khajuraho, Damoh, Satna, Rewa, Hoshangabad and Betul – are located in different regions of the sprawling state.

All these seats are known to be the bastions of the BJP, which has been ruling the state since 2003 barring a 14-months hiatus from December 2019 to March 2020, when the Kamal Nath-led Congress was in power. In the November 2023 Assembly elections, the BJP retained power by sweeping the state.

Gloves off in Congress-Left fight in Kerala, BJP very much in the ring

As the whole of Kerala votes in one phase for its 20 constituencies on Friday, the fight remains between the LDF and UDF. Their leading parties, the CPI(M) and Congress, are partners in INDIA bloc, but in the state, the contest has been bare-knuckled between the two, with the BJP emerging as a strong contestant to make it a three-way fight in some seats.

In the 2019 elections, the UDF had swept the state, winning 19 of 20 seats, a result attributed to Rahul Gandhi contesting from Wayanad. With Rahul again on the ticket, the UDF will hope to better its 2019 performance.

In Maharashtra’s 8 seats, Oppn focus on local issues unsettle ruling NDA

The discourse across the eight Lok Sabha constituencies in Maharashtra that are scheduled to vote in the second phase on April 26 is witnessing a shift, with a shuffle in traditional caste equations, the rise of the vocal rural voter and the dominance of local factors.

Perhaps the most significant of these new factors is the silent wave among Marathwada’s Maratha community, in the wake of the directions of Maratha reservation agitation leader Manoj Jarange Patil, appealing to Maratha voters not to think of helping a particular candidate win, but instead to defeat those who are opposing OBC status to Marathas.

Out of the eight constituencies going to the polls Friday, Akola, Amravati, Wardha, Buldhana and Yavatmal-Washim are in Western Vidarbha, while Hingoli, Nanded and Parbhani fall in the Marathwada region of the state.
