(PTI) THE LAW Commission, chaired by Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi (retired), on Wednesday made a presentation to the high-level committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind on its “suggestions and viewpoints” regarding simultaneous elections.
The second meeting of the committee on Wednesday was attended by all the members — Kovind, Home Minister Amit Shah, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, former Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, 15th Finance Commission Chairman N K Singh, former Lok Sabha Secretary General Subhash C Kashyap, senior advocate Harish Salve and former Chief Vigilance Commissioner Sanjay Kothari. The committee was set up on September 2 to “examine and make recommendations for holding simultaneous elections” to Lok Sabha, state assemblies and local bodies.
“The Law Commission of India made a presentation during the meeting elaborating their suggestions and viewpoints on the issue of simultaneous elections in the country,” a Law Ministry statement said.
The Law Commission was represented by Justice Awasthi, member Prof (Dr) Anand Paliwal, and Member Secretary Khetrabasi Biswal.
According to sources, the Law Commission is set to release its report on the issue of simultaneous elections soon.
The committee’s secretary, Law Secretary Niten Chandra, informed the panel that after its first meeting on September 23, letters had been sent to six national parties, 33 state parties and seven registered unrecognised parties to seek their views on the issue, the Law Ministry statement said.
He also told the meeting that the committee had been renamed as the “high level committee on one nation, one election” and a website for receiving suggestions and presenting information on the topic (onoe.gov.in) had also been developed. The committee launched the website during the meeting.
The committee decided to approve its budget for 2023-2024 and “noted” the resignation of Congress leader in Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who resigned soon after the committee was set up, the statement said.
