PC greeted with black flags, slogans at JNU

Home Minister P Chidambaram was greeted with slogans and black flags by a group of pro-Naxal students.

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram was greeted on Wednesday with slogans and black flags by a group of pro-Naxal students at the Jawaharlal Nehru University who attacked the government’s operations against the ultra Left outfit.

Chidambaram, who was in the university campus to speak at a seminar on “Naxalism: Threat to Indian Democracy and Internal Security” organised by pro-Congress NSUI,reached the venue at the School of Social Sciences auditorium at around 2130 hours.

Activists belonging to All India Students Association (AISA) and Democratic Students Union (DSU) shouted slogans against the Home Minister outside the auditorium after he reached there.

Carrying placards reading “Chidambaram,Go Back”, “Stop Operation Green Hunt” and “Hang Afzal Guru”,around 150 students shouted slogans outside the auditorium.

“The corporates and Hindu fundamentalists are the biggest threat to democracy, not Naxalism” said one of the pamphlets issued by DSU.

While pro-CPI(M) Students Federation of India opposed killing of innocent people by Maoists, they also questioned Chidambaram’s approach to tackle the Naxal problem.

“We are not convinced that your security-centric approach and muscle-flexing vis-a-vis the Maoists is an effective way of dealing with the problem”,said SFI in an “open letter” to Chidambaram.
