J-K: Girl held for false militant links charge

A teenaged girl from Rajouri had to spend two days in police custody for no fault of her own.

Call it lack of expertise on part of the state police personnel to intercept Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls,or the ability of militants to spoof their caller IDs with the help of advanced technology, but a teenaged girl from Rajouri had to spend two days in police custody for no fault of her own.

When nothing incriminating could be found against her during her sustained questioning since Saturday, the girl was finally let off by police on Monday evening, but with instructions that she shall appear before it whenever called for questioning.

Rashta Tabusum,18,of Maloot village in Darhal area was picked up by the state police’s Special Operation Group on suspicion of alleged links with militants, while she was at local market on Friday. “I came to know about her arrest after a police official from Rajouri rang up on Friday evening,” said the girl’s father Tuffail Hussain,an employee in Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department.

“The police have many things to do. She may have been picked up on suspicion and later let off after nothing incriminating could be found against her,” said Deputy Inspector General of Police for Rajouri-Poonch range,Rajesh Kumar. He,however, denied that the girl had remained in police custody for the night.

Sources said that the girl was picked up after SOG intercepted a VoIP call made to a mobile number, which was already under their surveillance on suspicion of it being used by a militant commander. Even VoIP calls made across the Line of Control were tracked to the girl’s mobile number.
