A 28-year-old man from Kerala has been arrested for allegedly killing his neighbour, who was reportedly in a relationship with his mother, using an electric trap.
Police identified the accused as Kaithavalappil Kiran from Punnapra North in Alappuzha district and the victim as Kallupurackal Dineshan (53).
Dineshan was found dead at a paddy field on Saturday morning, and police launched a probe after they discovered that he died of electrocution.
Police have also arrested Kiran’s parents, both in their 50s, who allegedly helped him dispose of the body and destroy evidence.
Locals discovered Dineshan in the paddy field on Saturday morning. They initially thought that he was in an inebriated condition but later realised that Dineshan, who worked in a timber mill, was dead.
Ambalappuzha deputy police superintendent K N Rajesh said, “At first, nobody raised doubts about Dineshan’s death. The inquest also did not indicate anything suspicious. The postmortem report pointed at electrocution as the cause of death. The body was found in an area where there were no electric lines, and we suspected a murder angle. When we questioned locals, we found that Kiran had a grudge towards Dineshan over the latter’s relationship with his mother. A few years ago, Kiran had clashed with Dineshan over this. On questioning, Kiran confessed to the crime.”
Though the families are neighbours, Dineshan had been staying at a lodge because of strained relations with his wife. On Friday night, Kiran allegedly laid an electric trap at his house since he expected Dineshan to visit.

According to the police, Kiran allegedly used an iron wire without insulation and laid a trap near the door Dineshan used to enter. The power supply was taken from a power socket inside the house.
“Dineshan was electrocuted while entering the house. Kiran then sought help from his parents to abandon the body at a nearby paddy field,’’ said the Deputy SP.
According to police, Kiran works in the construction sector, while his father is a daily wager.
Panchayat member Rajith Ramachandran said villagers were familiar with the relationship between Dineshan and Kiran’s mother, but the murder has shaken residents.
