J&K: Terrorists attack Rashtriya Rifles camp in Tral, one jawan killed

The militants carried out the attack on 42 Rashtriya Rifles camp in Luragam around 9 pm, killing sepoy Ngamsiamliana, who was on guard duty, they said.

This is the second such incident within four days, with militants using sniper rifle to attack security establishments.

An Army jawan was killed in sniper fire by militants in Tral area of south Kashmir on Thursday, officials said.

The militants carried out the attack on 42 RR camp in Luragam around 9 pm, killing sepoy Ngamsiamliana, who was on guard duty, they said. Ngamsiamliana received the fatal shot in his head, while another jawan Thake Dhoniy received minor injuries, the officials said.

This is the second such incident within four days, with militants using sniper rifle to attack security establishments. An SSB man was killed inside a CRPF camp on October 21 by militants using sniper rifles, possibly armed with night-vision devices, in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, six militants were killed in two separate encounters in north and south Kashmir amid security forces intensifying anti-militancy operations in the Valley. Four militants were killed in Arwani village of Anantnag in south Kashmir, while two Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants were killed in an encounter in north Kashmir’s Baramulla’s Athoora village, police said.

In Anantnag, there was a brief gunfight between militants and a joint team of J&K Police and the Army. The joint team had laid a cordon around Arwani village after receiving inputs about the presence of militants. As securitymen started a search of the area, the militants opened fire and tried to break the cordon. The forces retaliated, resulting in an encounter in which four militants were killed.

“Encounter at Arwani in district Anantnag is in progress. Security forces are on job,” J&K Police tweeted. The police had not identified the militants till this report was filed.

In north Kashmir, a joint team of police and the Army cordoned off Athoora village after getting inputs regarding presence of militants. When the team zeroed in on the target house, militants opened fire, leading to the encounter, police said. Local residents reportedly threw stones at the security team, and the militants escaped. The operation lasted through the day and two LeT militants, who were hiding in a three-storey house, were killed.

“As the search operation was going on, police while making all efforts to motivate the hiding terrorists to surrender provided them with several opportunities to come out. The identity of the slain terrorists is being ascertained,” J&K Police said in a statement. —With PTI inputs
