Protests after Jharkhand BJP leader shot dead in Ranchi

A local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader was fatally shot in broad daylight by unidentified shooters at Kanke Chowk in Ranchi, Jharkhand, triggering protests in the city.

Anil Tiger Mahto, a former Zilla Parishad member and the BJP’s district general Secretary of Ranchi Rural, was gunned down in a tea stall by two bike-born gunmen around 4:00 pm. Mahto was immediately taken to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) hospital in Ranchi, where he was pronounced brought dead.

According to the police, one suspect has been arrested. “However, we cannot disclose the suspect’s identity until investigation is complete,” Ranchi SSP Chandan Sinha told The Indian Express.

The shooting triggered massive protests and road blockades in the area, prompting local authorities to rush in police reinforcements – including central police forces.

Rural SP Sumit Kumar Agrawal, who visited the site, said police were looking at CCTVs across the area – including the highway – to help identify the second suspect,

“We have arrested the one who was riding pillion behind the driver. We have also identified the other suspect involved in the shooting, who is on the run,” he said.

Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Babulal Marandi offered his condolences.

“Met the family of late Anil Tiger, BJP Ranchi Rural District General Secretary and former Zila Parishad member, at RIMS and expressed my condolences. May God grant peace to the departed soul and give strength to the bereaved family to bear this immense loss,” he said in a post on X.
