Following a special court’s order, which had earlier issued a non-bailable warrant against actor-turned-politician Jaya Prada, Rampur police have formed a three-member team, led by a woman inspector, to arrest former MP.
The MP-MLA court had earlier issued a non-bailable warrant against Jaya Prada for alleged violations of the model code of conduct during the 2019 Lok Sabha election campaign.
Jaya Prada, a former Samajwadi Party MP from Rampur, had joined the BJP before the 2019 Lok Sabha election. She contested against senior SP leader Azam Khan on a BJP ticket and lost by over 1 lakh votes.
According to District Government Counsel (Rampur) Amarnath Tiwari, the court issued NBWs against Jaya Prada last month after she ignored the summons.
“Despite the issuance of warrants, Prada’s continued absence during the hearing prompted the court to issue NBW against her. When she still did not appear, the court issued directions for the formation of a woman officer-led police team to arrest her. Jaya Prada’s lawyer’s attempts to get the NBWs cancelled and file a revision plea against their rejection were both unsuccessful,” said Tiwari.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Superintendent of Police (Rampur) Rajesh Dwivedi said the three-member team has been dispatched to arrest the actor-politician. “Following the court’s order, a dedicated police team, headed by a woman inspector, was formed. The team has been dispatched to Jaya Prada’s possible locations to ensure compliance with the court’s order which had issued NBW against her,” Dwivedi added.
In the last hearing on Friday, the court also ordered that notices be served to those who submitted Jaya Prada’s bail sureties earlier.
In January this year, the court had granted bail to Jaya Prada on an arrest warrant it had issued in the same cases earlier. She had appeared before the court and had presented the bail plea.
Tiwari, meanwhile, said that both the cases are in the final stages of hearing.
