US Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel has said the US and India share one of the most consequential relationships, and the countries look forward to deepening their collaboration on a number of issues such as climate crisis, trade and economic ties.

Replying to a question regarding Modi’s first official state visit to the US scheduled later this month, Patel said: “…I will reiterate again that our partnership with India is one of the most consequential. It is a consequential relationship. We work closely with the Indian government on some of our most vital priorities and we look forward to hosting them here later this month and continuing to deepen our engagement on these issues, whether it be concerning the climate crisis, fostering an open and accessible secure technology ecosystem, upholding a free and open Indo-Pacific, deepening our trade and security cooperation as well.”

For the first time in nine years, PM Modi will travel to the US for an official state visit from June 21 to 24, where he will be hosted by US President Joe Biden at the White House.

The previous state visit by an Indian Prime Minister was undertaken by former PM Manmohan Singh from November 23 to 25, 2009. Although PM Modi has made several visits to the US throughout his tenure, none of them were officially designated as state visits, which hold the highest level of diplomatic protocol.

Highlighting the significant role India plays on the global stage, Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal said: “We are two democracies. Our constitutions both start with ‘We, the People’. We have similar sets of values historically, and we have similar challenges.”
