Violence in Srinagar,14 hurt

At least 14 people,including five security force personnel,were injured in clashes that erupted soon after CRPF jawans allegedly roughed up some shopkeepers and passers-by.

At least 14 people,including five security force personnel,were injured in clashes that erupted soon after CRPF jawans allegedly roughed up some shopkeepers and passers-by here this afternoon.

Security forces fired warning shots in the air and resorted to baton-charge to quell violence as protesters damaged some CRPF and police vehicles in Budshah Chowk at Maisuma,official sources said.

The gunshots sparked panic in nearby Lal Chowk,the nerve centre of the city,and other areas as people ran for cover.

Chanting slogans,a number of people took to the streets at Maisuma and pelted stones at a security picket protesting what they said beating up of shopkeepers and passers-by by the CRPF without any provocation.

Shopkeepers also downed shutters and joined the protest,the sources said.

Soon ding-dong battles between police and protesters broke out leaving 14,five of them security personnel,injured,they said.
