A day after MoS Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary told Parliament that the concept of marital rape cannot be applied in India, Congress leader Khushboo reacted strongly against his remarks.

Khushboo countered Haribhai’s statement saying that marriage is sacred but marital rape is not.

“Rape is a rape. If a woman is subjected to forceable sexual relations whether it is a stranger or her own husband, it is a rape,” said Khushboo.

Haribhai on Wednesday, in reply to a question in Parliament, said that the concept of marital rape cannot be applied in India as marriage is treated sacred within the Indian society.

Khushboo, expressing surprise at the MoS’s remarks, said that the “woman of his (Haribhai Chaudhary) house seem to be subjected to sexual abuse”.

“If somebody were to ask his wife whether she was subjected to this kind of torture, I am sure she would breakdown and say ‘yes, I have’,” said Khushboo.
