Unable to meet Badal, woman sets self afire

Gurpreet said she was an orphan and had been trying to meet Badal to get a government job to earn a living.

After waiting for three days to meet Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh, a woman from Gurdaspur set herself on fire near his residence Friday morning. Gurpreet Kaur (38) was rushed to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 16 with about 30 per cent burns.

Gurpreet said she was an orphan and had been trying to meet Badal to get a government job to earn a living.

Gurpreet said she had studied till class 12, but could not get a job. She had been staying at Golden Temple in Amritsar for the past 15 years.
Assistant Sub-inspector Balram Rana said the woman told them that she used to stay with an aunt in Gurdaspur. After the aunt moved to Canada, she had been on her own. She had come to Chandigarh Wednesday.
