UK-made ROV inducted in Army in J&K

The ROVs,remotely-controlled tracked vehicle designed to conduct investigation and deal with the IEDs,have recently been delivered to 115 engineers in the state along with several other Engineering units,he said.

The new ROVs have chains like a tank or a JCB and are more effective as compared to the old ones,which had only wheels.

The radio control ROV can be controlled up to a distance of one km,cable drum up to 150 meters and fibre optic cable up to 200 meters,he said.

There is full-fledged command station,which acts as a control centre for remote operating and monitoring ROV,the official said,adding the station has several latest tools to deal with IEDs,including Manipulator shotgun,Disrupt laser,Mechanical Grab,Car towing equipment and X-ray system.

The ROV can lift explosives up to 150 kgs and defuse it safely,he said,adding that it has three cameras and digital screen to monitor all activities.

“This is best machine to deal with IEDs. we have already conducted test trials and they were best results”,they said adding that it has given an edge to the troops in counter insurgency areas against IEDs.

The militants are using IEDs and land mines as safe weapon to strike security forces,VVIPs and civilians and cause terror without coming into direct contact with troops in Jammu and Kashmir.
