TWO LASHKAR militants were killed and a policeman injured in a 20-hour encounter in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district. The encounter started after police and Army’s Rashtriya Rifles launched a joint operation in Ratnipora village Monday.
The slain militants were identified as Showkat Ahmad and Gulzar Ahmad, both residents of Pulwama. Earlier, police had information that one of the slain militant could be Irshad Gania, a close associate of Lashkar operational commander Abu Qasim, who is said to be the mastermind of the attack on the BSF bus in Udhampur last week.
This is the second encounter in the area after the arrest of Pakistani militant Mohammad Naveed. Earlier, a local Lashkar militant was killed at Kakapora locality near the encounter site.
Officials said that on specific input, an operation was launched at Ratnipora village Monday night. As the police and Army patrols were searching the village, militants opened fire on them leading to an exchange of fire.
After the firing, the militants fled towards the paddy fields and apple orchards at Rakh-e-Lajoora. However, more troops were called in and all the neighbouring villages were cordoned off. Firing again broke out Tuesday morning, which continued up to 2 pm. A senior police officer confirmed the killing of two Lashkar militants in the encounter.
