Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday said that those who were trying to politicise the death sentence and hanging of Yakub Memon were doing a disservice to the nation.

Venkaiah, who was in Hyderabad to offer prayers at the Ujjaini Mahankali Temple and offer ‘bonalu’, a traditional Telangana festival, said that those who were sympathising with Yakub Memon were unable to differentiate between the death sentence and punishment for terrorism.

“All those who are debating about Yakub are doing a disservice to the country by sympathising with him. He was a traitor and contributed to damaging our country. Still, he was given a fair trial and when the court sentenced him to death, his mercy petitions were considered and rejected at the highest levels of judiciary,” he said. Naidu added that the country needs to fight terror “all our might”. “We are becoming worst casualty of terror. They are aiming to subvert our economy and weaken our country. There should not be any scope for any sort of leniency, as far as dealing with terrorists is concerned.”

“Terrorists have no religion but some people are trying to link Yakub’s trial and punishment with his religion and human rights, and those people are doing a great disservice to this nation. Some people like Asaduddin Owaisi (AIMIM chief) are saying that those involved in riots also should be hanged. My question is, has anyone stopped that from happening?’’

“When the funeral of a great son of India and scientist A P J Kalam was being held you people were playing up Yakub’s funeral. What is happening here? Some people are glorifying terrorists and their activities. The UPA had come up with this ‘Hindu terror’ tag. The NDA came to power only one year ago but we are not branding terror as Muslim, Hindu or Christian. Terror is terror and it will be dealt with accordingly,” Naidu said.
