As the Swachh Bharat Mission launched by the Centre completes one year, the government has intensified its efforts to propel people into action for cleanliness. The areas covered include agricultural and grain markets, religious and tourism places, educational institutions, resident welfare associations, under passes and flyovers, cantonment boards, water bodies and recreation places, hospitals, old cities and government offices.
Based on reports received till August this year, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Haryana have performed well in respect of construction of individual household toilets.
Against the target of constructing 25 lakh household toilets in urban areas till March 2016, construction of 16.45 lakh toilets has been taken up and 4.65 lakh have already been built.

States like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Tamil Nadu are yet to pick up momentum while toilet construction is still to begin in five Union Territories of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Delhi and states including Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Tripura, Kerala and Tamil Naidu.
Above the Central assistance of Rs 4,000 per construction of each toilet in urban areas, 13 states are providing additional assistance in the range of Rs 4,000 to Rs 13,000.
Against the target of building 1 lakh toilet seats by March 2016, construction of 94,653 toilet seats has been taken up and 24,233 seats have already been built.

Gujarat:
* 3,09,575 individual household toilets
* 510 public & community toilets
* Total waste processing units: 28
* Target by March 2016: 44
Madhya pradesh:
* 1,12,307 individual household toilets
* 2,180 public & community toilets
* Total waste processing units: 12
* Target by March 2016: 35
Punjab:
* 7,480 individual household toilets
* Zero public & community toilet
* Total waste processing units: 10
* Target by March 2016: 50
Chhattisgarh:
* 7,112 individual household toilets
* 3,571 public & community toilets
* Total waste processing units: Zero
* Target by March 2016: 10
Andhra Pradesh:
* 7,062 individual household toilets
* Zero public & community toilet
* Total waste processing units: 8
* Target by March 2016: 40
