The government has sanctioned 450 new executive posts at regional transport offices (RTO) across the state to speed up issuance of driving licences and vehicle registration.

With staff shortage — there are only 396 vehicle inspectors and 232 assistant vehicle inspectors — rules are often broken at RTOs.

Transport commissioner V N More said new and pending vacancies would be filled in two phases.

There are 300 new and 21 old vacancies of assitant vehicle inspectors and 150 and 70 of motor vehicle inspectors.

In the first phase,171 assistant inspectors and 220 inspectors will be recruited through Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC).

More said,“It is for the first time that these many vacancies have been created. Shortage of staff makes it difficult for us to conduct tests in the strictest possible manner. We are also requesting MPSC to expedite the process of recruitment.”

An MPSC recruitment cycle is of a year and a half.
