Kalburgi murder: Police release sketches of two suspects

Both Maharashtra police and Karnataka CID team are trying to ascertain if there is any link between Kalburgi's murder and the killings of Dabholkar and Pansare.

Police in the twin cities of Hubli-Dharwad released sketches of two persons suspected to have killed Kannada scholar and researcher MM Kalburgi at his residence in Dharwad in north Karnataka on August 30.

The sketches were prepared on the basis of eyewitness inputs, Hubli-Dharwad police commissioner Panduranga H Rane said Wednesday. They were also shared on social media to seek the help of the public to nab the assailants.

Meanwhile, representatives of Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmoolana Samiti met Kalburgi’s family. The executive president of the Samiti, Avinash Patil, said Kalburgi was assassinated by fundamentalists in a similar manner as rationalists Narendra Dabholkar and CPI leader Govind Pansare.

“Police have to focus on the role of fundamentalists in the murder and not other leads like property disputes,” Patil said. “Dabholkar, Pansare and Kalburgi were great personalities. They did not have any personal or property disputes in their lives. They used to share their thoughts with society.”

Patil added: “Dabholkar, Pansare and Kalburgi were killed in the same way. Police have diverted the attention of the public by saying property disputes, personal rivalry and ties with some women might be behind the incidents,” he added.

He said handing over the case to CBI would not be a good measure because the investigating agency was short-staffed.
