After the Friday prayers, clashes erupted in parts of the downtown areas of the city and in South Kashmir’s Anantnag town where separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani was planning to address a rally.
Police detained Geelani along with his supporters outside his home at Hyderpora when he was leaving for Anantnag town. When news of Geelani’s arrest reached Anantnag town, his supporters held protest demonstrations in the town and pelted stones on the police.
Recently, Director General of Police K Rajendra had said that Geelani is a free man and can go anywhere he wishes. After the statement of J&K DGP, Geelani announced rally in South Kashmir.
The Hurriyat (G) spokesperson Ayaz Akbar said that Geelani left home to address a rally in South Kashmir’s Anantang but was arrested outside his house in Hyderpora. “Earlier the Police had said that Geelani is a free man. It was a test for DGP’s statement about Geelani being a free man,” he said.
Officials however said that situation is under control in South Kashmir. “After the incidents of stone pelting the area is calm and the situation is normal,” said Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, Bashir Ahmad Khan.
Protests were also held in old city after Friday prayers ended at city’s Grand Mosque Jamia Masjid. Some youths also hoisted Pakistani flags.
Police used baton charge and fired tear smoke shells to disperse the protestors in the old city. Police also detained four protestors from the old city. “We have detained four protestors as of now,” said Sub Divisional Police Officer Khanyar.
