Sources confirmed that Colva police went to the accused’s house where he was unavailable on Tuesday.

“He can’t leave the nation as he has deposited his passport to the crime branch,” a senior police officer said.

Goa bench of Bombay High Court had set aside the order of district and sessions court which had granted anticipatory bail to the accused.

State police, who are facing strong criticism for lethargy in investigating the case, had earlier refused to question the accused as the court although the court had restrained only his arrest and not questioning.

Deshpande was on record to state that the police were searching neither the accused nor his car, which was allegedly used in the offence.

The accused had surrendered before the police after he managed to get anticipatory bail and was subsequently subjected to medical test.
