Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir on Saturday cited the Right to Education Act,2009,and rural employment guarantee scheme as examples that directive principles of the Constitution were being implemented.
Chief Justice Kabir was speaking on The Role of Directive Principles in Social Transformation at the Fort campus of Mumbai university on Saturday. These principles will remain empty words until they are translated into action, he said.
Chief Justice Kabir said Lok Adalats have led to a big transformation and had a great impact in the justice delivery system. Lok Adalats have reduced the number of cases filed in courts. They ensure that the matter is resolved at the initial stage.
Emphasising on translating directive principles into fundamental rights,he said,Unfortunately,our economic conditions are such that while child labour has been officially abolished,one still finds boys on the street serving tea and girls washing utensils.
