With two major earthquakes measuring 8.5 and 8.2 on Richter Scale hitting Indonesia,Met scientists feel that it is unfortunate that even after spending crores of rupees on research to forecast earthquakes in the country and the world over, the model was not helping in predicting earthquakes.
The seismology department of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Pune which records earthquakes the world over, said at 14.08 hours, the earthquake was recorded on the west coast of Sumatra with the epicentre at 2.3 N and 93.0 E.
Scientist P N Mohanan who observed the seismograph said any earthquake recorded above 7.5 on the Richter scale was definitely dangerous and can trigger a tsunami.
Even as the coastal areas of the country were on alert,Pune is nearly 2,700 kms away and there was no danger,he added. The alert issued by the government was later lifted, said Met department officials. Mohanan further added that the department records at least 2-3 earthquakes with a magnitude of around 8 on the richter scale,10-12 of them below 7 on the Richter scale in the world.
The present earthquakes were definitely high and was a threat to the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu ,Andhra Pradesh and Andaman and Nicobar islands. Earlier the country had issued the warning of tsunami which was later withdrawn. he said.
However the met scientists feel that there should be a proper system to forecast such tsunamis and earthquakes and even as there is lot of research going into it,there is no model the world over to predict such untoward incidents. We need a proper model whereby there can be such predictions, said the scientists.
