The Congress on Saturday slammed the NDA government over the Union Cabinet’s decision to repromulgate the land ordinance for the third time. On social networking site Twitter, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s office launched an attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and accused him of being in an “amazing hurry” to “grab land from poor farmers”. “Modi ji in an amazing hurry to grab land from poor farmers at any cost. Meanwhile, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, the Rural Development Minister in the UPA government when the 2013 Land Acquisition legislation was brought in, claimed the Modi government had made a “mockery” of the exercise of referring the matter to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), which had held its first meeting only a day earlier. The “black” ordinance would dilute the importance of the committee, he said. Congress communication department in-charge Randeep Surjewala slammed the NDA government over the repromulgation of the land ordinance, terming it as a “travesty of justice” and an “affront to Parliament”. “It is an affront to Parliament which refused to put its stamp of approval. The duplicity of the Prime Minister stands exposed as he had only yesterday said that his government is open to reviewing the anti-farmer land ordinance,” Surjewala said. In the second half of the budget session, sustained resistance from the Opposition forced the NDA government to refer the Land Acquisition Bill to a JPC. The 30-member committee, which has been mandated to submit its report on the first day of the monsoon session, held its first meeting on Friday. The next round of meetings are scheduled for June 8-9.
