NC MLA slams her own govt in JK

Ruling National Conference in JK faced an embarrassing situation when a party MLA slammed it for ‘backtracking’ from employment promises.

Ruling National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir faced an embarrassing situation in the state Assembly on Tuesday when a party MLA slammed it for “backtracking” from employment promises made during elections.

“Government has backtracked from the promises made during the elections. It is a fact that NC promised to provide employment to at least one person of a family during elections,” Shameema Firdous (NC) said in the Assembly during question hour.

The MLA claimed that the party had also promised to provide stipend to educated unemployed youth.

Shameema had lost her cool when the government,in response to her question, said “presently no such proposal of providing employment to one person of a family is under consideration”.

She said the credibility of the government has been “eroded” and party legislators cannot face the people. It is after the party decided that promises were made. NC has even constituted a committee for the purpose, she added.

The MLA received support from opposition benches including those of PDP,BJP and National Panthers Party when she asked the government whether it has framed any specific policy for providing employment and stipend to the educated unemployed youth.

Minister of State for Forest Shabir Ahmad Khan said,“it is premature for the government to make any commitment in this regard at this juncture.”

However,Khan said regarding providing stipend to the unemployed youth the financial and administrative implications of the proposal were being examined.

Meanwhile,Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister A M Sgar said,“We are committed to fulfil the promises made to the people during elections”.

Speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone also intervened and suggested members to give some time to the government to come up with a comprehensive policy in this regard as it has to consider all aspects and implications.

Joining the debate,M Y Tarigami of CPI-M said the political parties should not make promises which cannot be fulfilled.

Later,State Finance Minister A R Rather said the government will issue a notification on October 2 in this regard and within two months a policy will be framed to the satisfaction of the House.

“We are going to collect data about the number of unemployed youth in the state and after examining the financial implications and other related issues (will) frame a policy,” he said.
