A delegation of clerics from Sunni Ulema Council met senior Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader Indresh Kumar in Kanpur on Monday night and raised questions over the outfit’s views on Muslims and on their campaign to make India a ‘Hindu rashtra’ among others.
Indresh is also “margdarshak (guide)” of Muslim Rashtriya Manch, a body of RSS.
Barelvi cleric Maulana Tauqueer Raza Khan, head of Ittehad-e-Millat Council (IMC), is the patron of Sunni Ulema Council.
Khan had snapped ties with the Samajwadi Party last year blaming the Akhilesh Yadav government over several issues. He, however, was not part of the delegation which met Indresh.
The RSS leader was in Kanpur as part of the ongoing tour of Mohan Bhagwat, chief of the organisation, and the meeting was held at the residence of BJP corporator from Kidwai Nagar, Rita Shastri.
While Indresh could not be contacted, Rita said he has asked the delegation of clerics to hold a conference of Muslim organisations where he will answer their queries so that the message of RSS is communicated to a larger section of the community.
Meanwhile, Sunni Ulema Council general secretary, Haji Mohammad Salees, who led the delegation, said he earlier had sought time to meet Mohan Bhagwat but he denied post which Indresh met the delegation on his behalf.
“We had raised questions before the RSS leader to know about their opinion on Islam and their expectations from Muslims in the country. We felt the need of asking the question in light of the recent controversies on ‘religious conversion’ and ‘ghar wapasi’ programmes along with the RSS call to make India a ‘Hindu nation’, said Haji Salees. However, he added that Indresh did not answer to their questions.
Salees said that they also asked about the RSS format of a ‘Hindu rashtra’ and place of Muslims in that ‘rashtra’. Delegation also asked whether the so-called ‘Hindu rashtra’ will run as per Hindu religion books.
