Congress will attend to critical issues in urban areas of the state before the 2014 Parliament elections.
A report prepared by an advisory committee on urban affairs was discussed in Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC),led by Manikrao Thakre,Monday. The report,MPCC feels, will enable the government to relook at issues such as water, sewage and development of two-tier cities that need to be taken up on priority. It shows only 41 per cent of cities in the state have sewage-treatment facilities.
While acknowledging that cities do not create poverty but provide sustenance and opportunities for growth to the poor, the report calls for greater governance and appropriate policies. It says two-tier cities other than Mumbai-Pune-Nashik will require a boost by way of public investment in urban infrastructure. The report also stresses need to create awareness and encourage non-motorised transport such as cycling and walking. State Congress will make a presentation,Vision Urban Maharashtra, before the government.
