Kerala govt urges Centre to enable state to pay tributes to APJ Abdul Kalam

Kerala Government on Tuesday urged the Centre that the mortal remains of former president A P J Abdul Kalam be placed in Thiruvananathapuram to enable the state to pay tributes to the scientist, who had spend several years in the city.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy rushed a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Kalam’s body should be placed in Thiruvananthapuram before being taken to his native place Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu for final rites.

The mortal remains of the late former President were brought to New Delhi in a special Indian Air Force aircraft at about 12.15 on Tuesday.

At about 12.20, the rotors of the Indian Air Force C-130J stopped at the Palam technical area and his body, wrapped in tri colour was brought out by army, navy and Air Force men dressed in ceremonials.

Kalam’s body was later taken to 10 Rajaji marg, his official residence in an Army vehicle. Defence ministry spokesperson Sitanshu Kar tweeted that Kalam’s mortal remains would be kept open to public at his residence 4 pm onwards.
