The Kedar valley, which witnessed a devastating deluge that ravaged several parts of Uttarakhand last year, and left thousands of people dead and many more missing, is slow limping back to normalcy and trying to regain its foothold as a tourist destination. One year later, The Indian Express photo journalist Tashi Tobgyal visited the valley and compiled this photo feature.
The 22-km treacherous route to the Kedarnath valley presents the story of survival. Leaving behind the tragedy, pilgrims defy the odds to reach the Kedarnath shrine.
A visit to the valley a year after the tragedy when nothing but a deathly silence brooded over it, is a welcome relief as it has begun to throb with life again.
People in the valley are learning to come to terms with their bland existence and recollect themselves to take on the challenges ahead.
The natural disaster last year left 3,178 persons dead with many more still missing, according to official figures.
The dead are mostly males, having worked either as priests or shopkeepers or hoteliers or porters en-route to Kedarnath.
