Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday asked social welfare department to implement schemes,aimed at mitigating difficulties of the poor and needy,with a missionary zeal.
In the process of fulfilling social promises of the government,the social welfare department has a pivotal role to play and ensure that benefits of schemes reach the poor and deserving universally in the state, Omar said while reviewing the progress of various schemes in social welfare sector.
He said success of flagship programmes lay in ensuring advantages of these schemes to the poor and helping them to improve their living standards.
He highlighted the role of panchayats in implementation and monitoring of these programmes and asked the department to involve panchayats pro-actively to ensure benefits to the targeted population.
Identification of BPL families,monitoring of old-age pension,functioning of Aganwari centres and other schemes could be successfully carried forward by active involvement of panchayat members, he said.
Minister for Social Welfare Sakina Itoo said there were certain areas requiring additional financial support to achieve the targets.
