While consultations are on to explore the possibility of dropping these clauses, a final call is likely to be taken, and a meeting of the heads of IIMs is likely to be convened, only after a go-ahead from HRD Minister Smriti Irani.
Directors of IIMs in Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Bangalore, Kozhikode and Indore have strongly opposed the bill, while heads of some of the new IIMs have supported it.
The ministry could consider removing subsection (1) of Section 36 of the draft bill, which says the IIM Board “may, with the approval of the Central government, by notification, make regulations not inconsistent with this Act and the rules made thereunder to carry out the provisions of this Act”, said sources.
